Lecture/Workshop: "To Teach, Delight, and Move: Preaching and Rhetoric in a New Age of Evangelism"

Saint Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology, St. Meinrad, IN,
will present the 22nd annual John S. and Virginia Marten
Lecture in Homiletics on Tuesday, October 2, at 7 p.m. Central Time
in the conference room on the fifth floor of St. Bede Hall, on the
Saint Meinrad campus.
This year’s lecturer is Dr. Lucy Lind Hogan of Washington, D.C.,
whose talk is titled “To Teach, Delight, and Move: Preaching and
Rhetoric in a New Age of Evangelism.” Contemporary Christians live
in a challenging environment - from the New Evangelization to
indifference in religion to militant atheism. Dr. Hogan will
explore how rhetoric, both in its classical and contemporary
approaches, assists the preacher in navigating this complicated
terrain to proclaim the good news of Christ and God’s love.
She will also conduct a workshop on Wednesday, October 3, from
9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Central Time in the Flexible Conference
Room, located on the fourth floor of Newman Hall. Both the lecture
and the workshop are free and open to the public. The workshop will
be based on the model presented in the previous evening’s
lecture.
Dr. Hogan is the Hugh Latimer Elderdice Professor of Preaching
and Worship at Wesley Theological Seminary, where she has taught
since 1987. The intersection of rhetoric, persuasion, and preaching
has long been the focus of Dr. Hogan’s teaching and academic
writing.
She has been an officer in the Academy of Homiletics as well as
Societas Homiletica, the international homiletics society. Among
her many authored and co-authored works are Grateful Speech: An
Invitation to Preaching,The Six Deadly Sins of Preaching:
Becoming Responsible for the Faith We Proclaim, and
Connecting with the Congregation: Rhetoric and the Art of
Preaching.
This lecture/workshop series is made possible by an endowment
established by the John S. Marten family of Indianapolis. For over
two decades, Virginia Marten and the late John S. Marten have
generously supported the homiletics program at Saint Meinrad.
