The Graduate Certificate for Campus Ministers will fulfill the educational requirements for certification from the Catholic Campus Ministry Association, if you already possess a graduate degree in another field. (If you do not have a graduate degree, our MA (Theology) or MA (Pastoral Theology) will help you meet certification requirements.)

Drawn from the core curriculum of our MA (Pastoral Theology) degree, the Certificate curriculum provides you the essential coursework you will need to become a more effective campus minister.

Program Outcomes

Successful completion of the Graduate Certificate for Campus Ministers will enable you to:

  • demonstrate knowledge of the biblical, historical, systematic, and pastoral dimensions of Catholic belief and practice; 

  • understand the theology and pastoral praxis of campus ministry and how this ministry relates to a larger Catholic theological context.

Required Coursework

The Creed in History and Theology (3 credits)

3-credit core course in Sacramental Theology from among these:

  • Eucharist

  • Sacraments of Initiation

  • Catholic Sacraments

3-credit core course in Moral Theology from among these:

  • Christian Ethics

  • Fundamental Moral Theology

3-credit core Scripture course (Old Testament or New Testament) from among these:

  • Pentateuch and Historical Books

  • Prophetic Literature

  • Understanding the Old Testament

  • Old Testament Narrative and Poetry

  • Synoptics, Acts, and the General Epistles

  • Pauline and Johannine Literature

  • Theology of Paul

3-credit core Pastoral Counseling course from among these:

  • Listening in Pastoral Ministry

  • Pastoral Care and Counseling

  • Ministry to Families

  • Grief Counseling
