Here are brief profiles of some members of the Saint Meinrad monastic community.

Fr. Rupert Ostdick, OSB

Prior Work/Life Experience: After graduation from high school, I worked as a farm laborer and as a retail clerk for J.C. Penney Co.

Education:

  • Graduated from high school in 1939
  • Completed academic studies through the Minor Seminary and Major Seminary curricula at Saint Meinrad
  • Awarded A.B. degree in 1945

Work:  From 1947 to 1979, I served as treasurer of the Saint Meinrad complex. From 1972 to 1979, I also served as business manager of Saint Meinrad. From 1979 to 1991, I served as general manager of Abbey Press. 

From 1991 to 2006, I served in the Human Resources Department of Saint Meinrad Archabbey. During most of the time between 1952 and 2006, I also did spiritual direction and parochial weekend assistance.

Other Interests:  I've been interested in music. For a considerable period, I sang in the monastic schola. For some 20 years, I've been a cyclist.

What Attracted Me to Monastic Life:  Benedictine community life is patterned on a model of a family. That is what mainly attracted me to the monastic life here at Saint Meinrad.
