A Monastic Witness to Non-violence

Friday, May 15- Sunday, May 17, 2015
Location: Archabbey Guest House and Retreat Center

Fr. Louis (Thomas) Merton, OCSO, believed the pursuit of peace was not optional for Christians. Merton began his monastic vocation at Gethsemane as a pious young convert to Catholicism who also happened to be a brilliant, but as yet unpublished, writer. From writing books and articles about the interior life, monastic and theological themes, he turns outward in a spirit of compassion to write about Christian non-violent resistance to war and violence. Conferences for this retreat will present elements of the Trappist mystic's spirituality of non-violence as articulated in personal letters and essays published between 1961 and his untimely death in 1968.
