Saint Meinrad Archabbey

A catholic monastery devoted to the teachings of St. Benedict

June 24-30, 2016

We wrapped up our second conference of One Bread, One Cup this week. A few of the brave navigated the early hours to join us for morning prayer, and the interns and their Theological Reflection Groups took turns joining us for Vespers throughout the week. Several videos of the conferences are featured on our One Bread, One Cup YouTube playlist. Several ordained community members helped with the Penance Service during the conference, and we also joined the participants for their ice cream social on Tuesday night.

Father Vincent led a midweek retreat on "The Beatitudes: God's Logic in a Crazy World."

Tonight, Friday, July 1, we will celebrate Brothers Peduru (June 29) and Jean (June 24) for their recent feast days with a gathering at the Placidium (a tradition for monks in formation) - all in our community are invited to join the juniors and their superiors, Fathers Guerric and Thomas, in the feasting.

Wednesday, the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, we followed our "modified" Sunday schedule (Vigils and Lauds at 7:15 a.m. and Mass at 11 a.m. followed by midday prayer) and also enjoyed colloquium (talking) at dinner.

We are gearing up the move back into the monastery. Archabbot Kurt was the chair of the "move" committee, and he has assigned this position to Brother Jacob, who was instrumental in helping us move the first time in July of 1982 into the monastery. He will work with committee members Father Jeremy, Brother Martin and Brother James.

Father Prior Earl Henry of Saint Vincent Archabbey and Father Prior Christopher Kirchgessner of Belmont Abbey arrived Monday for a meeting with Father Abbot Kurt and Father Prior John to plan for a Priors' Workshop. Saint Meinrad will host the workshop November 10-14, 2016, here on the hill.

We have had several young men visit our community over the past couple weeks as they continue to discern monastic life. Please pray for these men and others who are interested in our way of life. Our Monastery Vocations website is a good first place to "get some info" about our way of life. And we recently have been publishing some discernment reflections from Brother John Mark on our Vocations Facebook Page.

You may have seen this already, but the Abbatial Blessing of Archabbot Kurt will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 26.

An update on our Monte Cassino Shrine:

A generous benefactor with a great affinity for the Monte Cassino Shrine has paid for a master plan to be developed to upgrade the facility. Subsequently, experts have been looking at various issues with the structure, which need to be addressed before enhancing the space.

The donor has agreed to finance the cost of stabilizing the structure and tuck pointing. That work will be done this summer. Over the winter months, the issues with the interior may be addressed. Next summer, the exterior grounds are scheduled to be improved.

We'll be inviting others to join him in funding these improvements. Brochures are being developed so they can be available at the shrine, as well as a sign noting the work that is planned and inviting others to join us in this effort.

On first Fridays of the month, Father Louis H. hears confessions in the house chapel during the early afternoon.

Speaking of confession (and mercy), don't forget that we are in the Jubilee Year of Mercy, and you're more than welcome to visit us on the Hill and pray with us by walking through our door of mercy.

PAX!

Each day the monks of Saint Meinrad Archabbey write another page in the long history of Benedictine monks throughout the world. Here are recent events chronicled at Saint Meinrad.
