Saint Meinrad Archabbey

A catholic monastery devoted to the teachings of St. Benedict

June 28-July 4, 2017

We recently adopted Lexi, a 5-year-old German Shepherd, who makes her home in our garden. She welcomes friendly humans and also dissuades garden predators like rabbits and deer.

Fathers Abbot, Prior, Justin and Adrian returned from the General Chapter meeting at Conception last Monday.

On Thursday, we had a modified Sunday schedule for the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul. Archabbot Kurt presided at our Eucharist and Office. Coworker and Deacon John Huether served as deacon for the Mass. Brothers Justin and Cajetan, from Togo, assisted at Pontifical Vespers.

Fathers Denis, Tobias, Thomas and Brendan attended the Seminary Administrators' Meeting in Rome and attended the Papal Mass where the pallium was given to Archbishop-designate Charles Thompson, our new archbishop. He will be solemnly invested with the pallium next month in Indianapolis.

Brother Joel, also in Rome, has been enjoying his attendance at the monastic institute at Sant' Anselmo in Rome as part of an international junior Benedictine conference. Father Edward oversees the program in Rome, as well as other international Benedictine programs. After the program, Brother Joel will spend some time at our motherhouse in Einsiedeln.

Friday was the last day of work for our Abbey Press coworkers. On behalf of the monastic community, Archabbot Kurt thanked and said goodbye to the remaining Abbey Press coworkers. Pray for these women and men who worked hard as part of our mission in serving the Church. We have added a daily petition to Vespers to remember our living and deceased coworkers, past and present, who so earnestly help us in our prayer and work.

Friday also saw the close of our second "One Bread, One Cup" conference.

This past weekend, Brother Kolbe gave a retreat on how to integrate physical health with spiritual health. More than 30 participated in the retreat.

Father Denis Q. began as Office heb for this week, and Father Joseph as Mass heb. Interns from "One Bread, One Cup" helped with various liturgical ministries on Sunday.

Cistercian author of several books regarding monastic life and the Rule of St. Benedict, Michael Casey, OCSO, gave a conference in Ferdinand this Sunday and Monday. A couple of monks participated in the conferences.

Brother Nathaniel and I (Brother Simon) arrived from Dallas in time for dinner on Monday. We stayed with the Cistercians at Our Lady of Dallas Abbey this past weekend to break up our drive from San Antonio, where we studied Spanish during the month of June. We are grateful for the Marianists' and the Cistercians' hospitality during our stays in San Antonio and Dallas.

Each day the monks of Saint Meinrad Archabbey write another page in the long history of Benedictine monks throughout the world. Here are recent events chronicled at Saint Meinrad.
