Saint Meinrad Archabbey

A catholic monastery devoted to the teachings of St. Benedict

May 23-June 6, 2017

Greetings from San Antonio. Editor Brother Simon here, with Brother Nathaniel. We are studying Intensive Pastoral Spanish for the month of June at the Mexican American Catholic College (MACC). I am grateful for monks back home to relay some updates from around the house.

We celebrated the jubilees of five of our confreres on May 28, 2017. Honored were Fr. Germain Swisshelm, 60 years of monastic profession; Fr. Sebastian Leonard and Fr. Aurelius Boberek, 60 years of priesthood ordination; and Fr. Matthias Neuman and Fr. Ephrem Carr, 50 years of priesthood ordination. More on the monks here.

The six members of the One Bread, One Cup (OBOC) coordination team arrived Tuesday; the remaining 15 OBOC college interns arrived later in the week. In addition to their pre-conference formation, the interns also did and will assist us at our Eucharist as readers, thurifers, and servers on the three Sundays they are here - including Pentecost on Sunday.

The interns will be on campus from May 30-July 30. New this summer will be the first off-campus conference of OBOC at Conception Abbey from July 12-23. The college interns hail from Mechanicsville, VA; Jasper, IN; Virginia Beach, VA; New Albany, IN; Edwardsville, IL; Bolingbrook, IL; Peoria, IL; Columbia City, IN; Erlanger, KY; Carmel, IN; Hays, KS; Miami, FL; Ada, MI; Walton, KY; Indianapolis, IN; Louisville, KY; Milwaukee, WI; Brookfield, WI; and Milan, IN.

Father Christian and Brother James have shifted into One Bread, One Cup work, and several other monks are helping in various capacities with the program throughout the summer.

Father Timothy has returned from parish work, and Father Luke has been appointed as administrator of his parishes: St. Isidore in Bristow and St. Martin of Tours in Siberia.

Brother Andrew has been appointed as vestarius (buys and keeps organized toiletries and other simple needs of monks) for the monastery.

Brother Benjamin and Father Jeremy helped the Ferdinand Sisters with their 150th anniversary this past weekend.

Priests from the Archdiocese of Louisville and the Diocese of Evansville are on campus this week for retreat and meetings.

The monastic community enjoyed colloquium (talking at lunch) on Sunday for Pentecost. Novice Joseph and Candidate Noel joined Father Abbot and Father Prior at the head table.

Novice Joseph is filling in for Brother Lorenzo as guest-master of in-house guests while Brother Lorenzo is serving in a summer parish assignment.

Each day the monks of Saint Meinrad Archabbey write another page in the long history of Benedictine monks throughout the world. Here are recent events chronicled at Saint Meinrad.
