John S. and Virginia Marten Lecture in Homiletics

Wednesday October 2
St. Bede Theater
9:00 a.m.

Saint Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology, St. Meinrad, IN, will present the annual John S. and Virginia Marten Lecture in Homiletics on Wednesday, October 2, at 9:00 a.m. Central Time in St. Bede Theater.

This year’s program will be presented by Fr. David Scotchie, D. Min., on the topic of “Getting Started in the Preaching Life.”

Before there were parishes and dioceses, parochial schools and seminaries, or cathedrals and podcasts, Jesus chose certain followers and sent them two by two. Preaching the mystery of faith is not just another task for the parish priest and deacon. It is a way of life. During his lecture, Fr. David will talk about three virtues that form us into preachers and practical tips to get started in the preaching life.

Fr. David earned a Master of Arts in Christian studies and a Master of Divinity from Saint Meinrad School of Theology in 1993. He continued his studies at the University of Central Florida, Orlando, and in 2003, he received a master’s degree in management. In 2009, he earned a Doctor of Ministry in preaching from the Aquinas Institute in St. Louis, MO.

Ordained in 1993 for the Diocese of Orlando, he has served in six parishes and was the campus minister at the University of Central Florida. He currently serves as the pastor of Nativity Catholic Church in Longwood, FL, and is a homiletics instructor for Saint Meinrad’s Permanent Deacon Formation Program as well as the Permanent Deacon Formation Program for the Diocese of Orlando.

Fr. David is the author of numerous articles and publications, including Rites of Passage: Preaching Baptisms, Weddings, and Funerals, co-authored with Fr. Guerric DeBona, OSB, and Francis L. Agnoli.

This lecture is made possible by an endowment established by the John S. Marten family of Indianapolis.

Parking is available behind St. Bede Hall, as well as in the Guest House and student parking lots.

The lecture will be livestreamed and can be viewed below, on our Facebook page, or our YouTube channel.
