Former College teacher dies

Gary CarpenterGary E. Carpenter, 78, Dale, Ind., passed away at 7:37 a.m. EDT Tuesday, May 3, 2016, in Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Newburgh, Ind.

He was born December 11, 1937, to Garland and Olga (Larsen) Carpenter.

Surviving are his wife, the former Carolyn Leach; a son, Glen Carpenter and fianceé Megan Berger; a daughter, Teresa (Mark) Dilger; and two grandchildren.

Mr. Carpenter was a graduate of Mount Carmel High School and Southern Illinois University. He taught mathematics at Lyons Township High School in LaGrange, Ill., and then was a professor of mathematics and computer science for more than 30 years at Saint Meinrad College in St. Meinrad, Ind.

He also taught at St. Benedict College and Marian Heights Academy in Ferdinand, Ind., and Brescia University in Owensboro, Ky. He farmed for several years and was vice president of GEC Software, Inc. He was an avid golfer and computer programmer and enjoyed his family and grandchildren. He was a member of the Santa Claus United Methodist Church.

A memorial service and visitation will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity. Boultinghouse Funeral Home in Rockport is in charge of arrangements.
