Saint Meinrad Archabbey Cultural Events will present a clarinet concert on Saturday, November 4, 2023, at 7:30 p.m. Central Time in the St. Bede Hall Theater.

The concert titled, “Clarinet Extravaganza,” will be performed by Brazilian clarinetist, Dr. Iura de Rezende, and Macau pianist, Kevina Lam. The program will include Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto in A Major, K. 622, Première Rhapsodie composed by Claude Debussy, Sonatine by composer Pierre Sancan, and Ivan Müller’s Grand Duo Brillant, Op. 97.

Dr. Iura de Rezende has appeared as a performing artist in venues throughout the United States, South America, and Europe, such as the Tonhalle in Zurich, the Stadt Casino in Basel, and Sala Cecília Meireles in Rio de Janeiro. An avid chamber musician, he collaborates with musicians and composers on a regular basis. He was a member of the OFICINA MUSICA VIVA New Music Ensemble, with whom he recorded several projects for broadcast television.

After concluding his undergraduate studies in Brazil, Iura completed a double master’s degree at the Academy of Music in Basel (Switzerland), receiving the soloist diploma and a clarinet pedagogy diploma. After continuing his studies at the University of the Arts in Berlin, he obtained a doctorate in clarinet performance, music history and literature, and early music performance from Indiana University at Bloomington, IN, as a Fulbright Scholar.

Iura was a professor of clarinet at the Federal University of São João del Rei in Brazil for over 15 years. He has taught master classes at universities and schools of music throughout the United States, Brazil, Europe, and South America. In 2022, Iura de Rezende was appointed as an assistant professor of clarinet at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

Kevina Lam has made frequent solo appearances with orchestras in Macau and Europe since her debut at age 14. She is in high demand as a collaborative artist, most notably with the flute and the saxophone studios at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Before being appointed as the faculty collaborative pianist at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Lam served as faculty at Eastern Illinois University.

A Doctor of Musical Arts graduate from the University of Illinois, Lam studied with esteemed teachers in Asia and North America, including Gabriel Kwok at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, and Professor William Heiles at the University of Illinois. Currently, Lam is faculty at School of Music of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
