Father Louis Mulcahy, OSB, a monk of Saint Meinrad Archabbey, died Sunday, August 24, 2025. He was 97, in the 43rd year of his monastic profession and the 36th year of priesthood.
Born in Lynn, Massachusetts, on January 26, 1928, to Thomas James and Ann (Kennedy) Mulcahy, he was given the name Thomas Francis at baptism. He graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1945, then enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He studied at the IBM Institute in Washington, D.C., and did research for the Naval Bureau of Personnel. After discharge, he worked for IBM in Boston.
He began religious life at St. Benedict Priory in Harvard, MA, professing vows as a Benedictine monk in 1981. He transferred to Saint Meinrad in 1984.
He attended Boston College and Weston College of Theology, completing his Master of Divinity at Saint Meinrad in 1988. He was ordained a priest on May 20, 1989.
He served as director of mail services, monastery guest master, coordinator of research at Abbey Press, spiritual director for oblates, custodian of Monte Cassino Shrine, and associate chaplain for Monastery Immaculate Conception in Ferdinand, IN.
The Office of the Dead will be prayed at 7 p.m. Central Time on Wednesday, August 27, in the Archabbey Church. The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Central Time on Thursday, August 28, in the Archabbey Church, followed by burial in the Archabbey Cemetery.
